Esther Rantzen Sets Up a Helpline for the Elderly

As we get older, the two dominant issues we have to deal with are ill health and loneliness. Esther Rantzen spotted the need for children to talk in safety to share their problems and set up Childline. She has now decided to set up the Silver Line Helpline for older people, many of whom live alone and gradually disconnect from social interaction. It is amazing that no one has thought of it before. The elderly can call for help with anything that is worrying them (feeling lonely, carer or family abuse issues, confusion about benefits etc..) and can be advised with what is available in resources (e.g. befriending groups etc..) . The helpline will be available 24hrs (as many elderly are often awake during the night). What a wonderful way to rebuild community!
